RACING POWER BOATS
DESCRIPTION
A racing power boat has only one cockpit, with 1 or 2 seats (some are driven kneeling or even lying down), it may have an outboard motor or an inboard engine, and it is designed and built for speed.
From the turn of the century until the 1960's, very many types of power boats were created, with desplacement hulls, planing hulls, stepped hulls, hydroplaning hulls, catamaran hulls, etc.
BUILD
As in all mechanical sports, it was the racing machines which made building techniques progress. Whether built in wood, steel, aluminium or fibre glass, racing boats are decades ahead of their cruising cousins.
Yards : Just as numerous as the boats themselves; the American ones naturally, but not forgetting the English, French, Italian, etc.
PRICE : Range from a few thousand francs for a little plywood outboard racer built in the 1960's up to several million francs for a famous boat like "Baby Bootlegger". For a pedigree racer, you should budget about 30 000 €.
