LA COUPE DE L’AMERICA

THE J CLASS ENDEAVOUR
1934-1984

All the J Class yachts were exceptional. They were the biggest, the most expensive, the most beautiful ever conceived, but the J Class Endeavour was perhaps even a little more so than the others.
Designed and built by Charles Nicholson in 1934 following an order placed by an out-of-the-ordinary businessman, Thomas Octave Murdoch Sopwith, this yacht was the fastest of its generation. In spite of this, she lost this legendary regatta known as the America’s Cup and contrary to the very tradition which requires that only the name of the winner be remembered, for the 1934 challenge, it is that of the runner-up, Endeavour, which will remain engraved in memory.
Laid up and abandoned on a mudflat at the start of the Second World War, she would be saved in 1984, by a good fairy, Elizabeth Meyer, who would bring her back to a life as she had once known during the most beautiful hours of her halycon days.
Such is the story behind this saga as here narrated by Jacques Taglang et François Chevalier, illustrated by period documents and, of course, photos of the yacht today.

Endeavour is the first title in the Legendary Yachts collection. This box set will present a monography of the greatest yachts of the XXth century accompanied by a series of plans, from the hand of two great specialists in the history of yachting and of naval architecture, Jacques Taglang et François Chevalier. Each monograph will present the history of the boat, its specifications, with biographies of the designers, the owners, the skippers, as well as plans specially realised for model-makers but also, of course, for lovers of naval architecture. All the texts in this collection devoted to the most beautiful yachts in the world will be in both English and French.
Forthcoming titles Australia, Britannia, Mariette, Tuiga.
